Is dark roast stronger than light roast?
Not in caffeine. Dark roast tastes bolder and more roasty, but it has slightly less caffeine by weight, not more. The bigger factor is how you measure: a scoop of dark beans weighs less than a scoop of light.
“Strong” gets used two ways, and that is where the confusion lives. If you mean caffeine, dark roast is not stronger; if anything it has a touch less. If you mean flavour intensity, dark roast does taste bolder, smokier, and more bitter. Both can be true at once.
Caffeine: roast barely matters
Caffeine is remarkably stable during roasting. It does not “burn off” in any meaningful way at normal roast temperatures. So gram for gram, dark and light roast land within a hair of each other, with dark sometimes a sliver lower because longer roasting drives off a little mass and other compounds.
The real twist is how you measure:
- By weight (grams): dark and light are nearly identical, dark maybe slightly lower.
- By scoop (volume): dark-roast beans are puffed up and less dense, so a scoop holds fewer beans, hence slightly less caffeine. Light-roast beans are denser, so the same scoop packs more beans and a bit more caffeine.
This is why people argue past each other. The honest answer: the difference is small either way, and your dose matters far more than your roast. The flip side of this question is covered in does-light-roast-have-more-caffeine.
Flavour: dark does taste stronger
Where dark roast genuinely is “stronger” is on the palate.
- Darker roasts develop heavy, roasty, bitter, sometimes smoky notes through caramelization and the later stages of roasting. See roast-levels-explained.
- Lighter roasts keep more of the bean’s origin character: brighter, fruitier, more acidic.
So “bold” and “high-caffeine” are not the same thing. If you want more of a kick, use more coffee rather than reaching for a darker bag. If you want a bolder taste, dark roast delivers, with no caffeine bonus attached.
