Brightness
also: liveliness
A pleasant, vivid acidity that makes a cup feel lively, clear, and refreshing.
Brightness is the word tasters use for acidity that lands as a positive quality: vivid, clean, and refreshing rather than sour or harsh. A bright cup feels lively and clear, the way a squeeze of citrus wakes up a dish. It is closely tied to acidity, but brightness specifically signals that the acidity is pleasant and well integrated.
Why it matters: brightness is often the difference between a cup that feels alive and one that feels dull or flat. It is a hallmark of high-grown coffees from origins like Kenya and Ethiopia, and it tends to survive best in lighter roasts.
How it shows up: you notice brightness early, usually in the first sip and on the front of the tongue. When it sits in good balance with sweetness and body, it lifts the whole cup. Lose it to a dark roast or a heavy over-extraction, and the coffee can feel muddy. A genuinely clean cup makes brightness easier to read.
